New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM-1) positive
Globalisation is permanently changing the world we live in. New multi-resistant bacteria have reached Europe!
A serious problem there of is that many bacteria have developed the capability of antibiotic-resistance. The increased and often unnecessary use of readily available antibiotics has enabled an increase of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The resistant genes are mostly found in so called plasmids, which are not part of the bacteria chromosomal DNA and therefore easily transferable among bacteria. This enables a rapid proliferation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Especially Gram-negative bacteria can contain several plasmids and can therefore become resistant to almost all classes of antibiotics. Since there are presently, and
mostly likely not in the near future, no effective therapeutic inhibitors available, a further and continual spreading of antibiotic-resistant bacteria would be a clinical catastrophe.
